Information

Searching the Register by article titles
To locate articles on specific subjects or specific family names, enter those subjects or family names in the 'Article Title Keywords' field.  (When words are entered in this field, the First Name, Last Name, Start Year, and End Year fields are ignored.)  A separate database containing the titles of all Register articles is then searched for the specified keywords.  For instance, to locate articles pertaining to 'Salem', enter the word 'salem' in the 'Article Title Keywords' field.  To locate articles pertaining to the 'Dodge' family, enter the word 'dodge'.

Searching the Register for first and last names
To find all references to a specific name, enter the name you are looking for in the 'First Name' and 'Last Name' fields.  You may limit your search to specific years of the Register by entering a Start Year and/or End Year. For example, you can limit your search to articles published since 1980 by entering "1980" in Start Year and leaving the End Year empty. The Register started publication in 1847. All issues through 2004 are now available.

The online index of the Register is based on the printed indexes that were published each year.  Note that surnames were most often indexed by their most common spelling.  For example, the suname "Smyth" may be found indexed under "Smith."

New England Historical and Genealogical Register

Published quarterly since 1847, The New England Historical and Genealogical Register is the flagship journal of American genealogy and the oldest journal in the field.  The Register has featured articles on a wide variety of topics since its inception, including vital records, church records, tax records, land and probate records, cemetery transcriptions, obituaries, and historical essays. Authoritative compiled genealogies have been the centerpiece of the Register for more than 150 years. Thousands of New England families have been treated in the pages of the journal and many more are referenced in incidental ways throughout. These articles may range from short pieces correcting errors in print or solving unusual problems to larger treatments that reveal family origins or present multiple generations of a family.
