Vital Records of Saybrook, Connecticut 1647-1834
From the introduction:
“Preparations for the publication of the Saybrook Vital Records were begun in 1940. A typed copy of the records, once the property of Frederick L'Hommedieu, and a long hand copy of a portion of the records by D. Williams Patterson, were used in checking against the originals, which at that time were in Deep River. Charles Strodt, Town Clerk and Registrar of Saybrook, was most helpful to us and did all in his power to expedite the copying. We are deeply grateful for these courtesies, without which our task would have been trying indeed.
Later, the volumes of records were removed to the Connecticut State Library where James Brewster, State Librarian, Harold S. Burt, Examiner of Public Records, and members of the staff of that library aided greatly in the checking and reading of the copy. Without their help, this volume, long delayed by the war, would not have been possible.
In March 1943, The Connecticut Society of The Order of the Founders and Patriots of America agreed to contribute one-third of the cost of printing. This agreement was voided on December 2, 1947, with the acceptance of an offer by that Society to bear one-half of the cost, with a resulting half interest in the sale of the volumes. We both hope to receive some return on the funds expended, so that other volumes may soon be forthcoming. This is a joint endeavor for which both organizations may take due credit. The actual work of transcription, editing and indexing, however, was performed by the staff of The Connecticut Historical Society.
In the interest of economy, long esses, superior figures and all unnecessary blank spaces have been omitted. With those exceptions, this is a copy of the original records found scattered in the first six books of Land Records and the first two volumes of Births, Marriages and Deaths in Saybrook, Connecticut.”
This database contains 2,776 births, 2,178 marriages, 217 deaths, and 4 deed records. The images of the original book pages may be viewed from the search results page.
This volume is also available in our Boston research library, call number F104.S3 D42.
