Crosby Family Online Exhibit

Wallace William CrosbyOur latest online exhibit highlights one of the many collections of family papers which are carefully preserved in our manuscript department. Family papers can consist of genealogical research, photographs, letters, diaries, and other material collected over time.

The Crosby family papers were donated by Delinda Trowbridge whose husband Thomas is a descendant of Wallace William Crosby and Catherine Edwards of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. The collection contains family pedigree charts, some genealogical research material, photographs, and other personal family treasures. The better part of the collection consists of family correspondence written between 1874 and 1910.

Wallace W. Crosby was a mariner, primarily based out of Yarmouth, N.S. Due to the decline in the shipping industry in Nova Scotia and his wife’s illness, Wallace moved his family to New York City in 1888 and eventually settled in Brooklyn.

The Crosby family can trace their ancestry to Cape Cod and the Rev. Thomas Crosby (1634/35-1702), son of Simon Crosby, the immigrant. Thomas’ descendant, Lemuel (1693-1743), settled in Barrington Township, Nova Scotia in 1762 with other New England planters.

Wallace William Crosby. born c. November 1842, at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, son of Capt. Josiah Crosby (1807-1882) of Yarmouth and Philotia Guptill (1807-1850) of Eastport, Maine. Wallace was a Master Mariner by trade. He was granted a certificate of competency as Master on 13 September 1867 in London, England. He married Catherine Edwards of Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England on 10 August 1869 at St. Thomas Parish, Liverpool, England. Wallace died on 2 December 1913 at Brooklyn, N.Y.

Catherine (Edwards) Crosby probably taken around the time of her marriage in Liverpool, England. Catherine was born 25 March 1853 at St. Mary le Wigford Parish, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England to William Edwards, an innkeeper, and his wife, Catherine Susannah Searby. Catherine (Edwards) Crosby died on 18 January 1890 at Brooklyn, New York after a long illness. She is buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn.

Written on the verso of Catherine's photo are notes recording her birth, marriage to Wallace Crosby, her children, and date and place of death.

Lucinda May Crosby around the age of ten. Lucinda,  the oldest child of Wallace and Catherine (Edwards) Crosby was born on 3 July 1870 at Falmouth, Cornwall, England.

Lucinda May Crosby (1870-1944) taken at New York City some time in the 1880's. She married Howard James Wood, M.D. (1861-1951) in Brooklyn, N.Y. on 18 February 1892.

John Howard Crosby taken at Brooklyn, New York. John, born at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, circa 1876, was the only son of Wallace and Catherine (Edwards) Crosby.

Elberta Fleet Crosby born at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, on 26 June 1881. The youngest child of Wallace W. Crosby and Catherine (Edwards) Crosby.

Elinor "Nell" Crosby was born on 10 January 1872 at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

William Edwards (1819-1882), father of Catherine (Edwards) Crosby. William was baptized at the Parish of Waddlington, Lincoln, England on 14 June 1819 to William Edwards (1790-1848) and Anne Harmstom (1790-1876). William Sr. was a farmer at the time of his son's birth. He later became an innkeeper on High Street in the town of Lincoln, England.

Catherine Susannah (Searby) Edwards, mother of Catherine (Edwards) Crosby. She was the daughter of  Benjamin Searby and Mary Fowler of Firsby, Lincolnshire, England. She married William Edwards on 16 Sept. 1844.
