Download pdf version

Birth:

Christopher Conant was baptized in East Budleigh, Devonshire on June 13, 1588, son of Richard and Agnes (Clarke) Conant.

Death:

He died after November 9, 1630.

Ship:

Anne or Little James, 1623

Life in England:

Christopher Conant was born in Devonshire in 1588. In 1609, he went to London and apprenticed to a grocer. On March 14, 1616, he was admitted a freeman of the Grocer’s Company. He lived in London until emigrating to New England.

Life in New England:

Christopher Conant came to New Plymouth in 1623. He received one acre in the land division, so presumably had come alone. He was not listed in the May 22, 1627, division of cattle, and so must have left Plymouth by then. He may have joined his brother, Roger, when the latter left Plymouth Colony and settled further north. Christopher was listed as a juror in Boston in 1630, but either died or returned to England after that.

Family:

Christopher married (1) Sicily Croxton at St. Ann Blackfriars in London on August 13, 1617. She was buried at St. Lawrence Jewry, London on August 19, 1618. He married (2) Mrs. Anne Wilton on September 14, 1619, in Shobrooke, Devonshire. There are no recorded children.
